The Kings Arms is just over the Earle Street bridge, at the corner of Rainbow Street. It has four distinct areas, two sides to the bar, darts, no food. Opened in late November 2007, Hops bills itself as a Belgian-style cafe bar and is now one of the stand-out pubs in the town. A new concept for Crewe, offering a great range of bottles beer, continental lagers and cask ales. Coffee, teas and food across the day, an intimate setting with wooden tables and chairs, large leather sofa chairs in the corner and an upstairs eating and drinking area that will be ideal for parties. You'll find Hops at the end of Prince Albert Street, opposite Christ Church with the Forge Street car park very handy.

Farmhouse, The

On the edge of Crewe as you head out of town down West Street and along Coppenhall Lane, The Farmhouse is pub, restaurant and hotel (Premier Travel Inn) rolled into one. Most drive past it from the Marshfield Bank roundabout on the way to Middlewich or Nantwich. Recently expanded, this is a Beefeater venue. Good size bar area, ample room for parties, popular for Sunday lunch.

Gaffers Row, The

In the heart of Crewe town centre, by the bus station, the Gaffers Row pub (Wetherspoons) takes its name from the historic railway workers houses still standing a few yards away. However, the pub is part of the old 1950s block that is due for demolition (the economic downturn has put this project back to 2013), to be replaced by a multi-storey shopping complex with bars, restaurants and apartments. It's not clear whether the pub will take one of the new units or look to relocate elsewhere within the town. Until then, the pub has much to offer...

Gaffers Row pub regularly hosts Real Ale festivals offering upwards of 50 beers from around the world. There has also been a wine festival and the pub continues to offer some of the best prices in town for drinks, snacks, meals or a simple coffee. Plenty of space, ample tables and chairs, upstairs toilets and a small smoking area/canopy at the front of the pub. There's still a no music policy, but there are games machines and two big screens showing SKY News and SKY Sports News (no sound, just the ticker headlines). Wetherspoon website here.

Dishers pool and snooker club

Dishers on South Street (just down from Crewe Alexandra's Gresty Road ground) now offers an impressive array of pool and snooker tables, several distinct games and drinking areas, affordable beers and lagers, plus a large covered area outside for the smokers. Crewe Alex memorabilia has recently been added to the walls. Not the best looking building on the outside, although improvements are ongoing. Inside, though, it's a warm and welcoming environment. Membership required, which can be completed on the day with appropriate ID.

Located on Wistaston Road by the junction with Bridle Road. They have now added traditonal beer which is changed every 6-8 weeks. There is a function room that can be hired at a low cost - accomodates a maximum 50 people. The bar is open until 2am on Friday and Saturday. Front doors shut at 11pm every night. There is a licence for live entertainment. Cosy pub with plenty of seating. Oh, and a bowling green at the back as well.

Earl, The

Update: a planning application (Feb 2010) to conver the pub into an Aldi store have been shelved. A grand old pub that can be traced back over 110 years. Built in 1897, there have been a few changes (one of the roof turrets was removed), an extension now forms the main entrance where other houses once stood, but The Earl (the "of Crewe" was dropped from the name) still stands proud on Nantwich Road near to the junction with Ruskin Road. There is ample parking to the side and rear, plus a huge beer garden with tables that fill with drinkers during the milder months.

Grand Junction, The

Possibly the most central Crewe pub, the current Grand Junction is a relative new build. Its namesake was demolished to make was for the Market Centre so its position was shifted a few metres to what is now the corner of Market and Heath Streets. Despite being located in the town it has a community pub feel. A recent terrace and canopy area facing Lyceum Square has given the smokers somewhere to grab a cigarette.

Prince of Wales, The

The Prince of Wales is one of several West Street pubs that for years served the railway and motor car workers from nearby factories. Much has changed, and the pub has changed hands a few times over the last few years. Large screen, darts and dominoes, bar snacks and varied beers. Limited parking off side streets behind West Street, and the area has benefitted from the later 2009 facelift given to the Weat Street shopping area. The Limelight Club in High Town has become a recognised fixture on the national tribute band scene, even featuring on a BBC2 Arena programme in October 2007. Established in 1995 by Ray Bispham, the vast music venue was sold on to a Stoke-on-Trent business man in early 2007. Still popular, the Limey has several music rooms, bars and now a cafe.

M Club

One of Crewe's newest music venues, the M Club compliments the Limelight and allows for bigger acts in its 1000 capacity hall. Situated at the bottom of High Street (opposite the old Crewe Chronicle newspaper office) the club was opened in summer 2007. The building was once the Apollo Cinema and some of the old rooms still exist upstairs. Two large bar areas, tables and stools line the main dance floor, with a massive centrally-located mixing deck. As the club's reputation grows, Stiff Little Fingers, Paul Young, Sohodolls and The Jam have already played, with Ocean Colour Scene and Dodgy booked for the summer. Drinks and merchandise can also be bought in the reception area.

Park, The

Duke of Bridgewater

An edge of town pub with few houses nearby these days. On the Wistaston Road, Edleston Road and Oak Street junction, the Duke was refurnished in 2006. Now a more open plan pub but it still has lounge and pool/bar areas. It had a brief spell as the Azyl, a Polish bar and restaurant (Azyl translates to refuge or sanctuary) before reverting to the Duke in September 08.

The one-time beerhouse was typical of many Crewe pubs that emerged from converted houses. The Duke was built soon after the Edleston Road bridge was constructed and the strangely isolated house next to the traffic light (now part of the pub) was once part of a block of four cottages that rose from the base of the bridge.

Waldron, The

Situated on Prince Albert Street, opposite Crewe Library, The Waldron joined the list of new(ish) pubs in 2006. The old job centre building was converted and they have done a superb refit. Food is served, long bar area, cosy seating and plenty of TV screens to show sport. There's also an extensive terrace area for smokers and drinkers during the summer months.

Eight Farmers

Delamere Arms

Update: closed as of July 2010. Completely refurbished in October 2007, The Delamere Arms (otherwise known as The Blazer)on Underwood Lane is an impressive local pub. As part of the revamp the brewery bought the terraced house next door and knocked through to extend the lounge and seating areas. The result is a proper boozer with a bar area, pool, darts, juke box and a large area of comfy chairs and quieter alcoves. There's free pool and music throughout each Saturday and they intend to start Karaoke in February. With a chippy a few yards away and a bookies over the road it's a handy little pub. Good atmosphere and very friendly.

Nags Head, The

Update: new management of Jamie (pictured), Alan and Jo from Friday 17th October 2008. Nice bunch who are hoping to get the pub buzzing again. A community pub on the edge of town, the Nag's Head serves drinkers from Broad Street to Middlewich Street. All of the usual darts, pool and footy teams, plus some good ales. Around the 1920s there was a gymnasium above the pub and many local boxers started their careers here. In fact, one of the pub's early landlords (Mr Phillips) organised a series of professional boxing tournaments at the nearby Lyceum Theatre. Seen here looking up Meredith Street, plus another image with some vandalism (now removed) on the letters that is nowt short of brilliant. Proper pub humour...

A seemingly mysterious name, not unlike that strange symbol fella of rock previously called Prince! In fact, it's number 7 on Nantwich Road and converts easily to a bar/club name. Plus massive neon sign. Formerly Clancy's, which was a mix of Irish and other live music, bar "7" lifts this end of Nantwich Road to a new level. Crown, The

Bang in the heart of Crewe, off Municipal Square and next to the council buildings. Back in July 1967 a new manager took over the bar. It was Lester Messam who had come over from Jamaica in the late 1950s and it was no surprise that the pub was soon given the nickname Jamaica Inn. The chap hanging over the bar is Dick Pixley who was recording a clip for his popular fortnightly radio show called Jamaican Rendez-Vous.

White Lion

We decided to list the White Lion as part of Crewe pubs as it does, techncially, fall within the Maw Green ward of the borough (part of the core ten wards that make up Crewe). Deceptive as most think of Parkers Road and Broughton Road as the boundary to the town. Not so, and just a few yards down from this junction you find the charming White Lion pub and restaurant. There's a good local trade, several distinct bar and seating areas, a light and roomy conservatory area that is used for food (it's a favourite for Sunday lunches) and loads of space outside that is utilised in the summer months and also on Bonfire Night when they put on a superb display! There's even a mini football pitch for the kids.

Crosville Club

The current site of the Crosville Club is both historic and, potentially, controversial. On the back of buses becoming an integral part of town life at the turn of the century, a handful of local bus companies and transport entrepreneurs were swallowed up by the Crosville Bus Company. A social club soon followed and the current building off Chester Street has stood for a good many years. However, the much-hyped redevelopment of Crewe town centre has meant that such institutions will have to move over, make way for the new. That's ok, but the club and its members want a new venue. And that's one of the sticking points, where to locate the new club and how to fund it. Latest rumours suggest that a new, purpose-built 2-storey structure will emerge on the site of the old Delamere Medical Centre. Currently plenty of car parking in the shadow of Delamere House and just a stone's throw from the Phoenix Leisure Park that is accessed (by foot) along the path that runs along the border of the Crosville Club. However, the existing car parks provide a revenue for the club. That seems to be one of the problems associated with the move and green light for the town centre work to start. Until then, the club remains open (correct as of early January 2008).

Angel, The

Unless you're a town centre drinker there's a good chance that you haven't noticed The Angel. The original Angel stood on Victoria Street before the new shopping centre was built, meaning that a new site for the old pub was required. The result was a strange basement boozer, something you'd expect to find in a city centre. Only a doorway with a few food and drinks signs suggest that a pub exists beneath. Rarely open at night, The Angel takes the bulk of its trade from lunchtime diners and offers some great home-cooked food. Several cheap beers and lagers, plus a decent cask ale usually on sale.

Royal Hotel

Stunning architecture on Nantwich Road in the shadow of Rail House, seen here (top) as part of the red-brick block that includes The Bank pub and Oakfield Racing bookmakers. Built around 1840 soon after the railway arrived in the town, The Royal Hotel was redeveloped in Victorian times to reveal much of the building's current form. It now has rooms for as little as £25 per night, two bars - Clancys and the Corner Bar - and a nightclub that has changed names across the years, the latest incarnation is The Box. All are busy venues across the weekend and also accommodate football fans (home and away) on matchdays.

As an aside, the hotel became Crewe's first Post Office in 1841, reducing the town's reliance upon Nantwich. The second image shows the view from Crewe station platforms, with some of the original lettering on the roof. Once upon a time it also said Billiards and Posting, the latter referring to the hotel's stabling facilities.

Flying Lady, The

In the middle of the Sydney estate that extends along Coleridge Way across to Hungerford Road, the Flying Lady salutes one of the town's employers - Rolls Royce. That company has changed, now kicking out only Bentleys, but the Lady keeps flying. Lion and Swan

Status: demolished (correct as of 05/06/09). Located halfway down West Street on the junction with Underwood Lane, the Lion and Swan was first threatened with closure in August 2007 when plans were unveiled to build seven homes on the site.

Sadly, there was a fire on Saturday 8th December and the front windows have been boarded up. From the rear you can see that plenty of internal damage was done. The future of the building in unclear...

Waverley Hotel

Just over the bridge by the Borough Arms, The Vine sits on the busy stretch of Earle Street a few hundred yards from the town's Municipal Square. Merlin, The

The Merlin sits on Bradfield Road as you head out of Coppenhall and into Leighton. The older Selworthy Drive and Rigby Avenue sits behind, while newer housing on farm land sprang up in the 1980s (such as Sedgemere Avenue, Merlin Way etc). Another new development has just been built next to The Merlin, so it has a good catchment area supporting it. There is pub-style food served daily, two bar areas, an outside terrace and a kids' indoor play area. A smokers' shelter has been added at the front, alongside the ample car parking.

You can also access the pub from the Crewe Green side of town if you drive along the new University Way bypass road. LMR Club

With its roots deep in Crewe's railway history the LMR Club has been a sporting and drinking club for years. Situated alongside the quaint cobbles of Goddard Street in the heart of the town's West End, the club has recently changed hands and rumours about its future are rife. Large function rooms have seen many family events staged over the years, with affordable catering and reasonable drinks prices. The football pitch still exists, including the old wooden spectators' stand (now closed for safety reasons), although the area is now surrounded by the recent Grand Central housing development off Dunwoody Way.

Three Lamps, The

Status: closed. Now reopened as Oscar's (see here). Centrally located, historic and with a chequered past, the Three Lamps looks out on Crewe's Municipal Square. The image shows the Three Lamps (on the right) as part of an elegant block of three-storey buildings at the top of Earle Street. A series of managerial changes over recent years have seen the look and feel of the pub alter regularly, with many of the old links with the Lyceum Theatre now removed. It's rumoured that the pub will revert to one of its former names, The Cheese Hall, in 2008 (also known as The Stilton in the past). Office, The

Status: closed in 2007. Name change to Bar 22. Not too long ago it was The Albion that stood proud on the corner of Mill Street and Pedley Street. A well-known Real Ale pub, that aspect of the business (plus the landlord) moved to re-establish The Borough Arms off Earle Street. And so The Office was born, a minimal interior, new lagers and bottles replacing the ales. There was an exterior paint job and it joined the Nantwich Road weekend circuit. Map location: here
